Tigran Gambaryan: Renowned Crypto Investigator Released from Nigerian Imprisonment
Tigran Gambaryan, a prominent IRS investigator, was wrongfully detained in Nigeria for eight months amid controversial charges related to his employer, Binance.
After spending eight distressing months in a Nigerian prison, Tigran Gambaryan has finally returned home to Atlanta.
His release came in October when Nigerian authorities allowed him to leave for medical treatment for serious health issues he encountered during his imprisonment, including malaria and pneumonia. Initially, he was detained under accusations of money laundering tied to Binance, where he worked.
Despite the lifting of these charges, the implications for Binance remain significant, as the Nigerian government holds it partially responsible for financial misconduct that allegedly harmed the nation's currency.
Gambaryan’s detention raised serious concerns among lawmakers and the crypto community, considering his notable reputation as an IRS investigator who previously played vital roles in high-profile crypto cases. Former colleagues, including Lili Infante and Ari Redbord, portrayed him as an exceptional investigator whose skills revolutionized crypto tracing at the IRS.
Several of Gambaryan's colleagues rallied for his release, including a campaign led by U.S. representatives urging government action on his behalf. Although Gambaryan is now recovering at home, his case has sparked discussions on the vulnerabilities faced by compliance professionals in the crypto industry and the precarious nature of international relations.
"Tigran is a very rare breed of elite investigator," said Infante.

His contributions to cryptocurrency investigations have been considerable and are acknowledged by advocates and colleagues alike. All eyes are now on how these events influence future crypto compliance practices.
