Concerns Over Zcash's Impact on Bitcoin According to Bloomberg Analyst

Eric Balchunas warns that Zcash could undermine Bitcoin's political and cultural backing.

Bloomberg Senior ETF Analyst Eric Balchunas articulates concerns regarding Zcash’s potential to harm Bitcoin’s political and cultural unity. In a recent post on X, Balchunas criticized Zcash (ZEC) for embodying ’third-party candidate vibes,’ similar to Gary Johnson or Jill Stein, suggesting it could lead to a fracturing of support for Bitcoin (BTC) during a crucial time.

Balchunas’s remarks come amid escalating discussions in the Bitcoin vs Zcash debate. Arman Meguerian, the CEO of Timestamp, refuted claims that Bitcoin advocates are shifting toward Zcash, stating, “I don’t know a single Bitcoin maxi that thinks about Zcash at all.”

Samson Mow of Jan3 supported this view, asserting that Bitcoin enthusiasts are merely “rolling their eyes” at Zcash.

The backlash around Zcash is intensifying, with industry figures accusing its supporters of creating hype. Mark Moss, a Bitcoin-focused venture capitalist, shared marketing messages from agencies offering collaboration with ZEC, questioning, “Wonder why Zcash is showing up EVERYwhere all of a sudden?”

Similarly, market analyst Rajat Soni expressed concern that the recent ZEC excitement aims to generate liquidity exits, particularly citing misleading reports suggesting that Fidelity analysts expect Zcash to soar to $100,000.

On the contrary, the Winklevoss twins, founders of Gemini and early Bitcoin investors, have shown support for Zcash. They established Cypherpunk Tech, the first company focused on Zcash treasury investment. In an interview, they described Zcash as “encrypted Bitcoin,” highlighting that while Bitcoin is suited for value storage, Zcash is preferable for private transactions. They view both assets as complementary, rather than competing.
