Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has recently donated over $760,000 worth of Ether to two projects he believes are advancing digital privacy. This significant contribution was made to the encrypted messaging platforms Session and SimpleX Chat, which are designed to enhance security and privacy for users.
Buterin stated that encrypted messaging applications like Signal are crucial for maintaining digital privacy. In a post on X, he emphasized the need for future developments in this field to include unrestricted account creation and enhanced metadata protection.
Both Session and SimpleX Chat do not depend on phone numbers or identifiable user IDs, aiming to reshape conventional messaging paradigms. Buterin, who reportedly has a net worth of over $737 million based on his cryptocurrency investments, has a history of supporting projects that align with Ethereum’s values.
The Need for Unity in the Crypto Community
As privacy concerns intensify with new regulations like the EU’s proposed Chat Control, Alexander Linton, president of the Session Technology Foundation, expressed gratitude for Buterin’s support. He highlighted the numerous challenges still present in safeguarding digital privacy.
“Everyone working on private messaging right now is living under some threat right now, due to regulation such as Chat Control, but this type of support helps us stay focused on the mission.”
Translation: Everyone working on private messaging currently faces threats from regulations like Chat Control; however, this support enables us to maintain focus on our objectives.
Buterin also pointed out that both applications should prioritize optimal user experience and security, acknowledging the inherent complexities, including the challenge of decentralization necessary for robust privacy.
“Sybil / DoS resistance, both in the message routing network and on the user side, without forcing phone number dependence, adds further difficulty. These problems need more eyes on them. I wish all teams working on these important problems the best of luck.”
Translation: Resistance to Sybil attacks and DoS, both in the message routing and on the user side without requiring phone numbers, is complex. These issues need more attention. I wish all teams tackling these challenges good fortune.
Raising Awareness for Encrypted Messaging
Chris McCabe, co-founder of Session, remarked on the importance of bringing global awareness to encrypted, decentralized messaging solutions. He believes that many users are unaware of data privacy issues.
“If there is one message that we can let the world know, it’s that you don’t need to be a product; you can be who you want to be and speak freely. Privacy is a right, you just need to know it.”
Translation: The critical message we should communicate globally is that you do not have to be treated as a product; you can be who you choose to be and express yourself freely. Privacy is a fundamental right, and you just need to recognize it.
