KuCoin's European Division Achieves MiCA License While Malta Stands Aside

KuCoin EU garners a crucial MiCA license from Austria's Financial Market Authority, enabling its operations across 29 EEA nations, but excluding Malta.

Major cryptocurrency exchange KuCoin announced that it has successfully acquired a MiCA license under the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA) framework through its European entity, KuCoin EU. This license, granted by the Financial Market Authority of Austria, permits operations in 29 countries within the European Economic Area (EEA) but notably excludes Malta.

“Securing the MiCA license with our local entity in Austria is a defining milestone in KuCoin’s long-term trust and compliance strategy,” stated KuCoin CEO BC Wong, emphasizing the regulatory framework as one of the most stringent globally.

This MiCA license follows KuCoin’s application filed earlier this year, positioning the exchange alongside other crypto asset providers like Austria-based Bitpanda, which already holds MiCA authorization in various EU countries.

“The decision to choose Austria was primarily driven by the timely implementation of MiCA accompanying laws, its stable regulatory environment, and the abundant talent pool,” the exchange stated in a previous announcement.

In addition to KuCoin, Austria’s FMA has also issued MiCA licenses to five other entities, including Amina Bank, Bitpanda, Bybit, Cryptonow, and FIOR Digital. Wong reiterated the company’s dedication to responsible expansion, asserting that compliance is fundamental to its long-term goal of providing safe and accessible digital asset services globally.
