Sassano Proposes Doubling Ethereum's Gas Limit – Aiming Higher
Ethereum educator Anthony Sassano believes the gas limit enhancement could surpass threefold next year, with hopes for a fivefold increase.
Ethereum educator Anthony Sassano has indicated that the gas limit for Ethereum could expand significantly, potentially exceeding three times next year, with some developers even advocating for a fivefold increase.
“I think that’s the floor, that’s the minimum, I think we can go higher than that,” Sassano said during a conversation on the Bankless podcast last Friday, following a recent raise of Ethereum’s gas limit from 45 million to 60 million.
Sassano noted that many core developers agree on aiming for at least a tripling of the gas limit in the coming years. Some are even exploring opportunities for a fivefold increase within the next year.
Aiming for a Higher Gas Limit
A higher gas limit is crucial for Ethereum users, as it allows the network to process more transactions per block, including swaps and smart contract executions.

Sassano explained that this objective could be realized through strategic adjustments to transaction costs, effectively reducing the fees associated with basic transactions while reallocating costs for more complex operations.
“We can lower the cost of a basic ETH transfer from 21,000 gas to 6,000 gas, which is an over 70% cost reduction,” Sassano elaborated. He emphasized that through cost redistribution, the network would be in a better position to support higher gas limits.
Upcoming Ethereum Upgrade
Sassano collaborated with core developer Ben Adams on the Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP), aiming for it to be included in the Glamsterdam upgrade expected in the first half of 2026. Several developers have commended the recent upgrade to a 60 million gas limit, which garnered support from over 513,000 validators.
Adams remarked on social media, “Remember when ‘double L1 gas’ sounded spicy on Twitter?”
Sassano is optimistic about the future of Ethereum’s scalability, particularly with the anticipated Fusaka upgrade, set to improve the network’s performance. The upgrade is currently in the Hoodi testnet phase prior to its mainnet launch on December 3.
