Shift in Web3 Gaming Workforce: Traditional Backgrounds Dominate

A recent report shows that professionals with traditional gaming experience now outnumber those specialized in blockchain technology within Web3 gaming companies.

Key Insights:

  • Over half of those working in Web3 gaming possess backgrounds in conventional gaming.
  • The most valued feature of blockchain gaming is digital asset ownership.
  • Poor user experience is identified as the industry's primary barrier.

Report Findings: Professionals from traditional gaming sectors now constitute a majority in Web3 gaming companies, according to the Blockchain Game Alliance's (BGA) 2024 State of the Industry report. The report reveals that 52.5% of participants have gaming expertise, the highest percentage recorded since the survey's initiation in 2021. Conversely, specialists in blockchain and cryptocurrency represent only 10.8% of the workforce, a decline from 21.7% the previous year.

“For an industry facing scrutiny about prioritizing fun over financialization in games, the trend of professionals with gaming backgrounds surging is noteworthy,” the report articulates.

The most valued aspect of blockchain gaming remains digital asset ownership, with73% of the 623 surveyed highlighting it as a principal advantage. This value has been consistent since the BGA's first survey in 2021, alongside other attractive features such as new player reward structures and revenue opportunities that underscore blockchain's potential to transform gaming.

Despite achievements, significant obstacles persist. Poor user experience and onboarding complexities are labeled the industry's most formidable challenges by 54% of respondents, although this marks a drop from 80% in 2023. This decline suggests advancements in simplifying blockchain gaming, aiming for enhanced accessibility.

“Innovation in design and functionality has reduced barriers, fostering a Web3 gaming ecosystem that is more intuitive and inclusive, attracting a broader audience,” remarked Sebastien Borget, President of the BGA and co-founder and COO of The Sandbox.

Additionally, a staggering two-thirds of surveyed individuals noted ongoing accusations targeting blockchain games as scams. Nearly 30% reported meeting criticism centered around alleged bot activity in Web3 gaming.
