Trump Declines to Pardon Sam Bankman-Fried in Recent Interview

US President Trump stated he will not pardon the former CEO of FTX, amidst questions regarding his family’s ties to the cryptocurrency sector.

US President Donald Trump reportedly will not grant a pardon to Sam “SBF” Bankman-Fried, who is currently serving a 25-year sentence for his involvement in the collapse of the cryptocurrency exchange FTX.

In a Thursday interview with The New York Times, Trump stated that he has no plans to pardon Bankman-Fried, along with others, including music producer Sean Combs and former New Jersey Senator Robert Menendez. Bankman-Fried has been incarcerated since August 2023 after a federal judge revoked his bail before the criminal trial.

In the same interview, Trump addressed queries related to potential conflicts of interest involving the cryptocurrency industry. He highlighted his family’s ties to American Bitcoin, a Bitcoin mining firm, and noted his involvement with World Liberty Financial, which operates the USD1 stablecoin.

“I got a lot of votes because I backed crypto, and I got to like it,” said Trump during the interview.

Bankman-Fried received a 25-year prison sentence in March 2024 after being convicted on seven felony counts concerning the misuse of customer funds at FTX. Caroline Ellison, the former CEO of Alameda Research, and Ryan Salame, a former co-CEO of FTX, received significantly shorter sentences through plea deals with prosecutors.

Despite the lack of a pardon from Trump, Bankman-Fried has avenues to appeal his conviction and sentence. In November, the US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit will review arguments from his lawyers regarding the appeal. If the court denies the appeal, he may seek a review of his case with the Supreme Court.

Ellison, who was sentenced to two years, is set for release on January 21, 2024. Records indicate she was transferred from a correctional institution to a management office as part of her transition towards the end of her sentence.
