Buterin Proposes Key Strategies for Ethereum's Longevity

Vitalik Buterin emphasizes the need for Ethereum to achieve quantum resistance and scalability to remain relevant for a century.

According to Ethereum’s co-founder Vitalik Buterin, the network must ensure its value proposition persists even when developers cease active involvement. In a recent post on X, Buterin stated:

“We must get to a place where Ethereum’s value proposition does not strictly depend on any features that are not in the protocol already."\n> Translation: We need to ensure Ethereum remains valuable even without ongoing updates.

Buterin compared Ethereum’s necessity to hammers, which remain useful once purchased, contrasting it with services reliant on vendor support.

As Ethereum forges ahead with a substantial technical roadmap, Buterin stressed the urgency of solidifying core features, advocating for advancements to protect against quantum threats and enhance scalability.

Areas for Improvement

Buterin proposed several strategic areas for enhancement to guarantee longevity:

  • Quantum resistance to secure against potential cryptographic vulnerabilities.
  • A scalable architecture, utilizing innovations like Zero-Knowledge Ethereum Virtual Machines (ZK-EVM) and Peer Data Availability Sampling (PeerDAS).
  • A multi-purpose account model for signature validation.

Buterin urges:

“Every year, we should tick off at least one of these boxes, and ideally multiple,” to fortify Ethereum’s technological robustness long-term.

In a recent discussion, he also highlighted the necessity for improved decentralized stablecoins, which he believes will enable users to gain greater independence from traditional finance.

Suggested a diversified asset-backed stablecoin for stability instead of relying on a single currency, like the US dollar.
