Surge in Impersonation Fraud: Scammers See 1,400% Increase in 2025
Crypto security experts are warning against a staggering increase in impersonation scams, which have surged by 1,400% from the previous year, according to a recent Chainalysis report. This alarming trend raises concerns regarding the safety of unsuspecting crypto users.
Understanding Impersonation Scams
Impersonation scams involve fraudsters posing as credible individuals or organizations to swindle victims out of their cryptocurrencies, passwords, and sensitive data. The report highlights that the average value taken in these scams has escalated by over 600%, which experts describe as a troubling development.
One notable incident involved scammers impersonating the cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase, leading to the loss of nearly $16 million from duped individuals. A Brooklyn man has been indicted in connection with this case.
“For example, many pig butchering and investment scams incorporate elements of impersonation, social engineering, and even technical- or wallet-focused scams,” Chainalysis stated.
The Role of AI in Fraud
Artificial intelligence has made these scams notably more sophisticated. Chainalysis reported that scams utilizing AI are 4.5 times more profitable, allowing fraudsters to reach greater numbers of victims simultaneously.
“The increased scam volume suggests that AI is likewise making scams more persuasive,” they added.
Preventing Scams
Authorities are urged to invest in enhanced detection and real-time fraud systems for 2026 to better combat scam activities. However, Chainalysis noted that no singular solution exists for these large-scale scamming operations, recommending a comprehensive strategy instead.
A group of experts previously advised on the importance of skepticism towards unsolicited messages and interactions as a crucial defense mechanism against such scams. They emphasize never sharing sensitive information, as legitimate organizations would never request it without proper context.
