Ethereum Readies for Quantum Challenges with New Security Initiatives

Ethereum's commitment to quantum security is heightened with the launch of a dedicated team and new funding efforts.

Ethereum’s New Quantum Security Team

Ethereum developers are set to introduce biweekly sessions focusing on quantum-resistant transactions, following the Ethereum Foundation’s commitment of $2 million to bolster core cryptographic protocols.

Formation of Post-Quantum Team

The Foundation has made quantum security a key target in its long-term strategy by establishing a Post Quantum (PQ) team. Leading the initiative is Thomas Coratger, a cryptographic engineer, supported by Emile, a cryptographer tied to leanVM, as noted by Justin Drake, a crypto researcher.

“After years of quiet R&D, EF management has officially declared PQ security a top strategic priority. It’s now 2026, timelines are accelerating. Time to go full PQ.”

Translation: After years of quiet research and development, the Ethereum Foundation management has officially prioritized post-quantum security as a strategic focus. It’s now 2026, and timelines are moving faster. It’s time to go all in on post-quantum technology.

Justin Drake describes leanVM, a minimalist zero-knowledge proof virtual machine, as integral to Ethereum’s post-quantum strategy.

Funding and Development Initiatives

Drake has outlined immediate plans to prepare the ecosystem, including biweekly developer sessions starting next month, led by Antonio Sanso. These sessions will focus on protecting users through protocol-level cryptographic tools and transaction signature aggregation using leanVM.

The Foundation backs this initiative with additional funding, announcing the Poseidon Prize worth $1 million and another $1 million initiative named the Proximity Prize to advance post-quantum cryptography.

On the engineering front, Drake confirmed that multiple client networks for post-quantum consensus are already operational, with collaboration through regular interoperability calls. The foundation will also host a dedicated event on post-quantum topics in October, followed by a post-quantum day in late March preceding EthCC. Educational materials targeted at enterprises are underway.

Coinbase’s Actions Against Quantum Risks

Concurrently, Coinbase announced the formation of an independent advisory board to assess quantum risks. This board will feature experts from quantum computing, cryptography, and blockchain security, providing public research and guidelines for industry stakeholders. Their first report is anticipated in early 2027.
