Polymarket Predicts a 77% Chance of US Government Shutdown by January

Polymarket betting platform shows a significant rise in the odds of a US government shutdown by the end of January, indicating growing political tensions.

Polymarket users are estimating a 77% probability that the US government will face another shutdown before January’s end, a significant rise of 67% in just 24 hours. This uptick follows comments from President Donald Trump, who warned that “we’re likely heading toward another Democrat shutdown.”

Senate Democrats, led by Chuck Schumer, have asserted they won’t support the appropriations bill if it includes funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), citing concerns about its adequacy. Meanwhile, Collin Rugg highlighted the increased Polymarket odds in a recent social media post.

In interviews, Trump hinted that another shutdown could be on the horizon: “We have a problem.”

The ongoing discord is clouding the future of the CLARITY Act, a crucial legislation aimed at establishing clearer regulations for the cryptocurrency industry. After mixed reactions from within the sector, including the withdrawal of backing by notable figures like Brian Armstrong, there are concerns regarding the bill’s potential setbacks.

Alex Thorn from Galaxy Digital noted the ambiguity surrounding stablecoin yields and the potential impact on the banking sector’s competitiveness. He remarked on the lack of visible compromises to advance the legislation’s prospects, despite an anticipated 4-6 week period for further discussions.
