Surge in Crypto Usage within Human Trafficking Networks in 2025: Insights from Chainalysis
A significant increase in cryptocurrency usage by suspected human trafficking operations has been reported, highlighting both the challenges and potential of blockchain transparency in combatting these activities.
Cryptocurrency inflows to suspected human trafficking networks rose by 85% year-on-year in 2025. Despite this alarming trend, Chainalysis indicated that the transparency provided by blockchain technology could assist law enforcement in disrupting these operations.
In a recent report, Chainalysis revealed that the total transaction volume directed at suspected trafficking networks located primarily in Southeast Asia reached hundreds of millions of dollars. These networks closely align with scam operations, online casinos, and money-laundering schemes prevalent in Chinese-speaking territories.
The types of activities tracked by Chainalysis include:
- Services related to international escorting via Telegram.
- Labor placement agents involved in kidnapping and forcing individuals to work at scam facilities.
- Prostitution rings and vendors distributing child sexual exploitation material.
Different crypto payment methods were identified, with stablecoins predominantly utilized by escort services and prostitution networks.

Utilizing Blockchain for Trafficker Tracking
Chainalysis emphasized the potential of blockchain technology to aid law enforcement in discovering and dismantling trafficking networks by monitoring transaction patterns and compliance with regulations.
“Unlike cash transactions that leave no trace, the transparency of blockchain technology provides unprecedented visibility into these operations, creating unique opportunities for detection and disruption that would be impossible with traditional payment methods,” Chainalysis stated.
Law enforcement has seen successes in combating these operations, including significant actions taken by German authorities against a child sexual exploitation platform, facilitated by blockchain analysis.
