Ben McKenzie Unveils Trailer for Documentary Critical of Cryptocurrency Industry

The new documentary features insights from notable industry figures and explores the impact of crypto on politics.

Ben McKenzie, a Hollywood actor known for his roles in Gotham and The OC, has launched a trailer for a documentary addressing cryptocurrency that includes interviews with significant industry figures.

Released by The Forge on Tuesday, the documentary, titled “Everyone Is Lying to You for Money,” features McKenzie commenting on the absurdities of cryptocurrency, describing it as “pretty stupid,” and outlines his transition into a critic of the industry. The film presents footage of former FTX CEO Sam “SBF” Bankman-Fried and former Celsius CEO Alex Mashinsky before their companies faced collapse. Additionally, it features interviews with celebrities like Morena Baccarin and Gerard Butler.

The trailer reveals McKenzie questioning SBF about his political donations and includes El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele, who supported the adoption of Bitcoin (BTC) as legal tender in 2021. Intriguingly, Butler confessed to McKenzie that he had profited significantly from investing in crypto without any real knowledge of it.

Shifting his focus from acting to denouncing issues in the cryptocurrency sector, McKenzie’s awakening came in 2020. Following the FTX debacle in 2022, he testified in front of a US Senate hearing scrutinizing the exchange’s downfall, labeling the crypto industry “the largest Ponzi scheme in history.”

Bankman-Fried Explores Potential Pardon or Appeal

SBF is currently serving a 25-year prison sentence in US federal custody following his conviction in 2023 for stealing customer funds. He has two avenues for possible early release: an appeal and lobbying efforts directed at President Donald Trump, although Trump has dismissed the idea of a pardon.
