The Ethereum Foundation, which is responsible for overseeing the development of the Ethereum platform, released a new mandate reaffirming its commitment to its mission and core principles.
The organization aims for a highly decentralized Ethereum that empowers users to retain complete control over their assets and information, while also achieving scalability. According to the mandate, foundational values such as censorship resistance, open-source development, privacy, security, and technology that preserves freedom will be maintained.

The Foundation expressed its intent to concentrate on essential protocol upgrades, long-term research, cybersecurity, and providing necessary tools for developers, while seeking to minimize its own influence over time. They stated:
“Our ultimate goal is for Ethereum to pass the walkaway test: its protocol and core application layers become robust and trustless enough that they would continue to reliably function and evolve even if the Foundation and today’s core developers disappeared tomorrow.”
The Ethereum Foundation is focusing on reducing its role gradually as it works through a process of subtraction. This update comes after a challenging period for Ethereum, as Buterin has voiced criticism about the current approach of various layer-2 solutions, calling for renewed strategies for better scalability.
Buterin Calls for Reform of Ethereum’s Scaling
Buterin pointed out that many layer-2 solutions still possess centralized elements, such as private trusted networks and centralized sequencers, lacking clear pathways to full decentralization.
“The original vision of L2s and their role in Ethereum no longer makes sense, and we need a new path,” Buterin noted earlier this year.
He questioned the value of a layer-2 project that can handle 10,000 transactions per second while still depending on centralized methods to interact with the main Ethereum protocol. Instead, he suggests that these layer-2 solutions focus on specific niches, such as privacy features, identity verification, finance apps, and social platforms, which has drawn varied responses from developers within those ecosystems.
