Decline in Crypto Theft: $73 Million Stolen in January 2025

January 2025 witnessed a notable decrease in cryptocurrency theft, with hackers stealing $73 million—a 44% decline from the previous year.

Cryptocurrency-related Cybercrime Decreases

In January 2025, cryptocurrency-related cybercrime experienced a notable decline, with hackers stealing $73 million across 19 incidents, marking a 44% decrease from the $133 million stolen in January 2024. Despite this reduction being a positive sign for industry security, the stolen amount represents a sharp increase from December 2024, when only $3.8 million was taken, as highlighted in a January 30, 2025 report from Immunefi.

Largest Attack: The major incident of the month targeted the Singapore-based exchange Phemex, which lost $69 million. This was the bulk of the funds stolen.

Second-Largest Hack: The hack involved Moby Trade, a crypto options platform, suffering a $2.5 million breach. The data indicates that centralized finance (CeFi) platforms faced 93% of the theft, amounting to $69 million, while decentralized finance (DeFi) recorded 18 attacks with total losses of just $4.8 million.

Insights from Immunefi’s Report

“Major attack: The biggest losses came from two incidents—Phemex ($69.1M) and Moby Trade ($2.5M). Are North Korean hackers involved?”

Mitchell Amador, CEO of Immunefi, believes CeFi platforms will remain primary targets for hackers in 2025 due to vulnerabilities in security and infrastructure.

Bug Bounty Programs: Immunefi offers over $181 million in bounties for ethical hackers, aiming to protect more than $190 billion in cryptocurrency assets.
