Charges Filed Against Canadian Hacker for $65 Million Crypto Thefts

A Canadian man has been indicted for allegedly stealing $65 million in two cryptocurrency hacks, highlighting ongoing issues in decentralized finance security.

U.S. prosecutors have charged a 22-year-old Canadian man, Andean “Andy” Medjedovic, for orchestrating hacks totaling $65 million involving cryptocurrency, specifically targeting the Indexed Finance and KyberSwap platforms.

In a recent indictment filed in the Eastern District of New York, officials claim that Medjedovic was the mastermind behind the hacking incidents. It was revealed that he previously admitted to being involved in the Indexed Finance exploit, stealing $16 million when he was a minor.

Previously unknown details surrounding Medjedovic’s alleged participation in the KyberSwap hack have emerged, and he has also expressed a belief that his actions were within legal bounds. This stance mirrors similar claims from other hackers in the decentralized finance space, like Avraham “Avi” Eisenberg, who was convicted after claiming prior hacks were merely exploiting gaps in the system.

Medjedovic has been evading authorities since December 2021, indicating that he found life on the run to be taxing. Prosecutors note that eight months ago, he identified himself as a whitehat hacker, despite allegations of stealing approximately $50 million from KyberSwap. The indictment accused him of meticulous planning leading up to the hack, urging himself to act with notes such as “Find time to Strike!” and developed an exit strategy for post-exploitation.

With multiple charges against him, including wire fraud and money laundering, he could face a maximum sentence of 90 years in prison.
