Christie's to Introduce Digital Ownership Certificates for Photography Sale

Christie's is set to auction a photography collection with a unique blockchain twist, offering digital certificates for ownership.

Christie's is venturing into the blockchain space by providing digital ownership certificates for a collection of photographs by Ambassador Trevor Traina.

The auction, titled "An Eye Towards the Real: Photographs from the Collection of Ambassador Trevor Traina," is set to take place at the Rockefeller Center in New York on Wednesday. It will feature 130 lots, each accompanied by a digital ownership certificate minted by Kresus on Base, which is a layer-2 blockchain of Ethereum.

Christie’s and Kresus announced, "This pilot program marks a significant step forward in the art world’s adoption of blockchain technology, aligning physical works with digital certificates to ensure transparency and security for art collectors."

In addition, Christie's has been engaged with blockchain innovation since 2021, notably auctioning digital artist Beeple's Everyday collection for $69 million, which was a groundbreaking moment in the market for non-fungible tokens (NFTs).
