Uniswap Labs Launches Unichain: A New Layer-2 Network Addressing Transaction Speed and Cost

Uniswap Labs has introduced Unichain, a layer-2 network built on Optimism technology, aimed at enhancing transaction speeds and liquidity for Ethereum users.

Uniswap Labs has announced the launch of Unichain, a new layer-2 network built using Optimism's OP Stack technology. This initiative is designed to facilitate quicker and more economical transactions on the Ethereum blockchain while enhancing liquidity for users.

Overview

Unichain is set to debut on a private test network this Thursday. The development project utilizes technology that has previously been adopted by various companies, including Coinbase and Sony.

"People actually want things to feel instant," stated Hayden Adams, CEO of Uniswap Labs, regarding the motivation behind the initiative.

Industry Context

The recent launch is part of a broader trend among major crypto exchanges to establish their own layer-2 networks to optimize transaction performance. Following in the footsteps of Coinbase’s Base and OKX's X Layer, Unichain aims to operate as a liquidity hub on Ethereum.

Technical Innovations

Uniswap Labs plans to implement unique features, such as a Trusted Execution Environment (TEE) for block building, which aims to ensure transaction transparency and speed. Current transaction times could reduce from 12 seconds on Ethereum to as little as 250 milliseconds on Unichain.

"Going from two seconds to 250 milliseconds for the experience that a user will have is actually extremely impactful," added Adams.

The firm intends to introduce a community validation network by 2025 to decrease risks associated with transaction finality and enhance decentralization. This approach could bolster security and user trust in the new network's operations.
