Nigerian Court Rejects Bail for Binance Executive Tigran Gambaryan

A Nigerian judge has denied bail to Tigran Gambaryan, who has been held since February, prompting concern for his health.

Binance executive Tigran Gambaryan was denied bail by a Nigerian judge, as reported by a family spokesperson on Friday.

“We are deeply disappointed by the court’s decision to deny Tigran bail, particularly given his deteriorating health. He has been unlawfully detained for over 220 days,” a Binance spokesperson stated, adding that the company is committed to collaborating with the Nigerian government.

Gambaryan, who oversees financial crime compliance at Binance, has been incarcerated since February and is currently in the infamous Kuje prison, where he has been housed with members of the terrorist organization Boko Haram. This follows an incident in March where another Binance employee, Nadeem Anjarwalla, escaped from custody.

Along with Binance itself, Gambaryan faced charges related to tax evasion and money laundering, though the tax allegations have since been dropped.

The court postponed its bail decision in September after Gambaryan's lawyers filed a new application, citing concerns about his declining medical condition. Mark Mordi, one of his attorneys, highlighted that Gambaryan has needed surgery since July 18 and is in urgent need of medical assistance not currently available in prison. Reports from Bloomberg confirm these claims.

During his imprisonment, Gambaryan has battled malaria, pneumonia, and tonsillitis, and he suffers from complications related to a herniated disc, which has left him in need of a wheelchair. However, in a recent court appearance, he was seen using only a single crutch and struggling to walk.

“It is completely unjust to deny someone in Tigran’s condition the opportunity to seek appropriate medical help,” Yuki Gambaryan expressed. “I am exhausted and deeply disappointed, but I will continue fighting for my husband’s rightful freedom.”
