BlackRock, Superstate, and Centrifuge Secure $1 Billion in Tokenized Asset Investment

Sky's plan allocates $1 billion for tokenized real-world asset products through partnerships with BlackRock, Superstate, and Centrifuge.

Key Insights:

  • BlackRock-Securitize, Superstate, and Centrifuge’s tokenized Treasury products are set to benefit from a $1 billion investment plan initiated by Sky (formerly MakerDAO).
  • This initiative forms part of a broader trend where blockchain-based platforms are incorporating tokenized versions of conventional financial assets.
  • The plan aims to significantly enhance the market for tokenized U.S. Treasuries, which currently has a valuation of $4.6 billion.

Tokenized Treasury products from BlackRock-Securitize, Superstate, and Centrifuge are slated to receive portions of the $1 billion investment fabricated by Sky, aiming to quicken the adoption of real-world asset (RWA) tokenization on its connected DeFi lending platform, Spark.

  • BUIDL, backed by U.S. Treasury bills and repurchase agreements from BlackRock and Securitize, is scheduled for a $500 million injection.
  • Superstate’s USTB will receive $300 million, while Centrifuge’s JTRSY— a T-bill fund created in collaboration with asset managers Anemoy and Janus Henderson— will be allocated $200 million.

The selection procedure involved evaluating 39 applicants through an advisory firm, Steakhouse Financial, integral to Spark’s ecosystem focusing on RWAs. The criteria for selection included liquidity and capital efficiency, with final allocations to be market-driven and capped at $1 billion, as indicated in Spark’s press release.

Pending governance approval, these selected tokenized assets might also be utilized as collateral for Sky’s native stablecoin USDS and its yield-bearing sibling, sUSDS.

This strategic move is indicative of a larger trend where blockchain protocols are assimilating tokenized iterations of traditional financial assets, such as bonds, funds, and credits. In 2024, Sky had exhibited its intention to invest a billion dollars in tokenized U.S. Treasury bills, generating interest from a diverse pool of issuers.
