Trump's Digital Assets Director Claims Government Aims to Acquire Bitcoin

US President Trump's Executive Director on Digital Assets reveals plans to collect Bitcoin as a significant asset for the nation.

While addressing the Digital Assets Summit in New York on March 18, 2025, Bo Hines, the Executive Director on Digital Assets for US President Donald Trump, described Bitcoin as comparable to gold. Hines expressed the administration’s goal to acquire “as much Bitcoin as we can get.”

“We view Bitcoin—not as a security but as a commodity,” he stated. “It possesses an inherent value, being traditionally acknowledged. There is no issuer, which is why we likened it to digital gold in our executive order.”

Quote from Hines:
“We wish to obtain as much Bitcoin as we can.”
*Translation: Vogliamo ottenere il maggior numero possibile di Bitcoin."

Prominent figure Michael Saylor expressed his support for Hines’ comments about increasing Bitcoin reserves.

Hines asserted that Trump has effectively honored his campaign promises regarding cryptocurrencies. On March 6, 2025, Trump enacted an executive order forming a crypto reserve, which comprises Bitcoin, Ethereum, Ripple, Solana, and Cardano. This action fulfills Trump’s commitments made during his campaign. Hines highlighted the need for the US to build on its Bitcoin reserve while collaborating with the Treasury and the Secretary of Commerce for strategies to acquire more. Currently, the US owns 198,109 BTC, while the UK has 61,245 BTC, and North Korea is reported to control 13,562 BTC due to a state-sponsored crypto heist.

Hines emphasized that the administration’s approach to Bitcoin is a significant change from prior strategies that involved selling off Bitcoin holdings, which led to considerable financial losses. He highlighted an ambitious vision for the government’s Bitcoin reserve, comparing it to a nation’s gold holdings.

Quote from Hines:
“America will be the Bitcoin superpower of the world.”
Translation: L’America sarà la superpotenza del Bitcoin nel mondo."

The executive order indicates that the government will utilize only budget-neutral methods for acquiring Bitcoin, primarily relying on existing assets already in government custody through confiscations and forfeitures.
