Binance Co-Founder Changpeng Zhao and Binance Charity are deploying over $1.5 million in aid to support recovery efforts in Myanmar and Thailand following a 7.7 magnitude earthquake.
The earthquake struck Mandalay, Myanmar, and felt as far as Bangkok, Thailand, leading to significant casualties and destruction. Authorities report at least 1,700 fatalities and many injuries, prompting calls for international aid.
On March 28, 2025, Zhao announced a personal contribution of 1,000 BNB (valued at $630,000), split evenly between Myanmar and Thailand, to support infrastructure rebuilding and medical services. The management of these donations will be entrusted to Binance and Binance Thailand.
“I will donate 500 BNB each to Myanmar and Thailand. Is there a transparent on-chain donation system with DID? If not, I will rely on @Binance and @Binance_TH_ to distribute.” — CZ 🔶 BNB (@cz_binance) March 28, 2025
In addition to Zhao’s donation, Binance Charity has outlined an airdrop initiative worth up to $1.5 million in BNB for affected individuals, with distributions occurring by April 14, 2025. Eligibility for aid varies by verification status and location, ensuring timely assistance to those most in need.
As cryptocurrency plays a pivotal role in relief efforts, it promises rapid and secure aid distribution, highlighted by its effectiveness during past disasters. Organizations such as Save the Children advocate for the advantages of blockchain in providing humanitarian assistance in emergencies.
