Nishad Singh's Defense Teams Urge Judge for Leniency, Emphasizing His Altruistic Nature
Singh's attorneys argue for a lighter sentence, portraying him as a selfless contributor to the FTX case.
Lawyers representing the former FTX Director of Engineering, Nishad Singh, have filed a request asking a federal judge for leniency in his sentencing. The document presented to the U.S. Southern District of New York on October 16 portrays Singh as an "uncommonly selfless individual" and is supported by over 100 testimonials from family, friends, and former colleagues.
The document states: "His role was far more limited than any other defendant. He does not minimize his conduct; he pled guilty to serious crimes at the outset of this case and will regret his actions for the rest of his life. But his sentence should recognize that Nishad did not join the conspiracy at the heart of this case – the theft of FTX customer funds – until September 2022, just two months before the collapse of FTX."
Furthermore, the filing highlighted Singh's cooperation with authorities following FTX's bankruptcy announcement, describing the evidence he provided in initial meetings as crucial for bringing both Sam Bankman-Fried and Ryan Salame to justice.
In February 2023, Singh admitted guilt to six criminal charges, including fraud and conspiracy, stemming from his involvement in FTX's collapse. In October 2023, he testified against Sam Bankman-Fried during the latter's trial, which resulted in Bankman-Fried being sentenced to 25 years in prison in March 2024 after convictions on seven counts of fraud and conspiracy. Ryan Salame also faced prison time following his guilty plea earlier this month and Caroline Ellison received two years in prison last month for similar charges.
Singh's sentencing is scheduled for October 30, with former CTO Gary Wang set for sentencing on November 20.
