Data Breach at Transak Affects 93,000 Users Due to Employee's Laptop Mistake

A data breach at Transak, a cryptocurrency onboarding service, has exposed the basic personal information of nearly 93,000 users, following the misuse of an employee’s laptop.

A recent incident at Transak, a widely used 'onramp' for cryptocurrencies, has led to a data breach affecting around 93,000 users due to an employee's improper use of a company laptop. Following the breach, a ransomware group has initiated negotiations with the company.

Transak confirmed that the leaked data included names and basic identity information but did not compromise sensitive data like social-security numbers or credit cards. The CEO, Sami Start, stated in an interview with CoinDesk that while the breach was serious, it was categorized as 'mild or moderate' since only 1.14% of their users were affected and no sensitive financial information was compromised.

The ransomware group has claimed responsibility for the attack and criticized a $30,000 negotiation offer to delete stolen data. They asserted that the breach involved access to a significant portion of Transak's user data, amounting to over 300GB, including sensitive documents such as government-issued IDs, proof of addresses, and other personal records.

Transak maintains that this incident is contained to its KYC vendor without any wider ramifications on their systems. The company is taking corrective measures to mitigate the risks and has been in contact with law enforcement agencies regarding the breach.

Important Points:

  • Employee used laptop for non-work activities leading to data access.
  • Transak claims data breach doesn't involve financial documents or identities.
  • Ransomware group demands raised higher than initial negotiation offer.
