Sei Network Plans Shift to Ethereum Focus, Ending Cosmos Support

A developer at Sei Network suggests discontinuing support for Cosmos to streamline operations and enhance alignment with Ethereum.

Overview

A Sei Network developer has proposed to end support for Cosmos, aiming to simplify the blockchain’s operations while aligning more closely with Ethereum. This change could enhance the user experience by reducing complexity and infrastructure demands.

Key Details

  • The proposal seeks to make Sei compatible solely with Ethereum transactions, which may boost adoption and streamline developer engagement.
  • The decision responds to increased competition among blockchain infrastructures vying to attract developers.

Developer Insights

Philip Su from Sei Labs highlighted:

“This transition will lead to greater adoption, improved developer experience, and a more cohesive community.”

This proposed shift follows a trend where Ethereum-based technologies dominate decentralized finance (DeFi) applications, utilizing the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM).

Competitive Landscape

Solana and Cosmos have developed their software ecosystems, but Sei’s dual support has introduced complexity. Su explained:

“While this dual architecture has provided flexibility, it also introduces significant complexity and friction for both users and developers.”

By pivoting towards Ethereum, Sei aims to streamline operations, as shown by increased deposits on their platform reaching an all-time high of $1 billion, ranking as the 15th largest blockchain by total value locked, according to DefiLlama.

Community Engagement

Sei Foundation’s Build with Sei initiative plans to host a call on May 14, allowing community members to discuss the proposal in detail, share feedback, and ask questions.
