Market Update: Bitcoin Drops Below $67K, Causing a Wider Cryptocurrency Downturn
Overview of the Crypto Market on October 23, 2024
Bitcoin (BTC) has seen a substantial drop, slipping below the $67,000 threshold, which has consequently triggered a broad decline across major cryptocurrencies. This afternoon, BTC fell to approximately $66,500, marking a decrease of about 1.3% over the last 24 hours.
The CoinDesk 20 Index, encompassing a range of digital assets, has experienced a slight drop of over 1.5%. Following a week of positive movement, Bitcoin ETFs lost close to $80 million on Tuesday. Notably, Dogecoin (DOGE) led the losses among key tokens with a 3.8% decrease, while Ethereum (ETH) and XRP fell by around 1.5% each.
Factors Influencing the Market Decline
Market observers have identified a slowdown in stablecoin issuance as a critical factor hampering the progress of the cryptocurrency market. Stablecoin liquidity is closely tied to the pricing activity of Bitcoin and other crypto assets.
“Stablecoin volume has not increased since late September, setting up a potential pause in the growth of the broader cryptocurrency market. The previous growth momentum was from August to September when the overall crypto market capitalization surged,” Alex Kuptsikevich noted in an email to CoinDesk.
Apple's iPhone sales may act as a strong backbone for volatility in these markets as investors eagerly await the upcoming U.S. presidential election. While some analysts speculate Bitcoin may reclaim its previous highs irrespective of whether Donald Trump or Kamala Harris claims victory, others believe a change in administration could sway market sentiment in positive directions.
“Both Presidential candidates have adopted pro-crypto stances. Regardless of the outcome, the market appears to be responding favorably to anticipated changes in policy,” shared Jeff Mei.
