David Goyer Ventures into Blockchain with New Sci-Fi Universe
Filmmaker David Goyer is creating a community-driven sci-fi franchise named Emergence, leveraging blockchain and AI technology with the backing of Story Protocol.

David Goyer, known for his work on the Blade trilogy and The Dark Knight, announced on Friday his plan to establish a blockchain-based science fiction universe named Emergence.
Destined to be a vast transmedia project with features like spaceships and relic-hunting, Emergence will be constructed on Invention, Goyer’s blockchain platform.
In a recent panel discussion at CoinDesk’s Consensus conference in Toronto, Goyer provided details on his vision for Invention, aiming to empower fans to co-create within the Emergence universe.
“The idea is that we’re going to involve the community in all of this, and they’ll have an opportunity to create characters who will be joining the podcast, joining the animation, etc.”
Translation: “La idea es que vamos a involucrar a la comunidad en todo esto, y tendrán la oportunidad de crear personajes que se unirán al pódcast, a la animación, etc.”
Goyer highlighted the shortcomings of Hollywood’s traditional intellectual property models, which he describes as too centralized and antiquated. He believes Web3 technology can foster innovation in storytelling.
Insightful discussions about Story Protocol, a platform launched in 2023 to streamline the registration and monetization of intellectual property on the blockchain, highlighted its potential. Goyer noted that he has penned a 2,500-page story bible to serve as the creative foundation for this universe, further enhanced by the input of talented artists and authors.
Goyer expressed optimism about leveraging AI within this endeavor, referring to an AI called “Atlas” that will facilitate collaboration among creators under a structured narrative framework. He emphasized the shift towards a tokenized world.
“AI, Web3, blockchain — none of this stuff is going away… It’s really about deciding whether I’m going to stick my head in the sand, or I’m going to have a seat at the table.”
Translation: “IA, Web3, blockchain: nada de esto va a desaparecer… Se trata de decidir si voy a esconderme o si voy a sentarme a la mesa.”
His aims to employ these technologies to benefit artists rather than detract from their craft.
