Binance Executive Tigran Gambaryan Exits Nigeria After Detention
Tigran Gambaryan, a Binance executive, has been released from Kuje prison in Nigeria after facing money laundering accusations that have now been dropped.
Tigran Gambaryan, a Binance executive who faced accusations of money laundering while detained in Nigeria, has successfully exited the country after the charges were dismissed. A family spokesperson confirmed that Gambaryan was released from Kuje prison and has left Nigeria.
"He's in the air," a U.S.-based lawyer on Gambaryan's legal team shared with CoinDesk.
Gambaryan's health significantly declined during his incarceration. Despite multiple bail requests being denied, he was granted the opportunity to leave for medical treatment abroad after the recent dismissal of charges against him.
A prosecutor from the Nigerian Economic and Financial Crimes Commission mentioned in court:
"The government has reviewed the case... and also taking into consideration some critical international and diplomatic reasons, the state seeks to discontinue the case against the second defendant."
Yuki Gambaryan, his wife, expressed her relief at his release:
"It is a huge relief that this day has finally come. The past eight months have been a living nightmare."
U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan confirmed that Gambaryan was released on humanitarian grounds. He had suffered complications during his detention that necessitated medical attention.
Richard Teng, Binance's CEO, stated:
"We are deeply relieved and grateful that Tigran Gambaryan has finally been released after enduring nearly eight months of detention in Nigeria."
Despite Gambaryan's release, Binance continues to face two trials in Nigeria regarding money laundering and tax evasion issues.
