Methodology Behind the Top 50 Women Contributing to Web3 & AI
A detailed examination of the process by which CoinDesk compiled a list of influential women in the sectors of Web3 and AI, highlighting their critical roles in shaping future technology and industry trends.
At first glance, combining Web3 and AI in a headline might seem like an attempt to attract attention through trendy buzzwords, a tactic often used by media outlets to optimize search rankings. However, CoinDesk has been chronicling the gradual integration of blockchain technologies, which catalog extensive data, with AI, which interprets it, for nearly a decade.
In the inaugural CoinDesk Top Women in Web3 & AI list, we consulted a panel of esteemed women judges to compose a list that reflects the current landscape.
Parallel Technological Shifts
We are witnessing two significant technological revolutions: blockchain’s potential for decentralization and AI’s rapid evolution in transforming work and creation. Though these disciplines might appear unrelated, they both fundamentally reshape the digital world’s infrastructure.
The intersection of these fields is timely. AI increasingly requires vast computational resources and data access, while blockchain networks explore applications beyond mere cryptocurrency, particularly in areas like data verification and digital identity.
Leading AI firms are investigating blockchain solutions for data authenticity, while crypto projects adopt AI for applications ranging from fraud detection to autonomous trading. A new domain known as decentralized artificial intelligence (deAI) is emerging, utilizing the computational power of blockchain audits to train competitive AI models.
Recognizing the Pioneers
The gender disparity in the technology sector, especially in fields like blockchain and AI, is well-documented. Despite complex factors contributing to this gap, it remains evident that women continue to be underrepresented in these domains.
However, the 50 exceptional women on this list are not peripheral figures in the story of technology; they are its leaders. They are constructing protocols and platforms, managing billion-dollar startups, and influencing global governance while addressing challenges not originally designed for their involvement.
AI thrives on inference, while blockchain ensures data integrity. Their convergence provides a framework for a more responsive and accountable future.
This initiative was made possible through collaboration between CoinDesk and Proof of Talk, facilitated by XVentures at their annual summit held in the Louvre Palace in Paris, bringing together diverse actors from the blockchain and AI sectors. As both AI and blockchain technologies advance globally, European participation in both the development and policymaking spheres is of paramount importance.
Selection Process
To maintain objectivity in our selection process, diverse viewpoints were sought. An initial outreach yielded over 300 nominations worldwide. The editorial board at CoinDesk ultimately shortlisted these to 100 semifinalists, which were reviewed by a panel of five judges with expertise in the relevant fields.
