Switzerland Passes Key Legislation for Crypto Tax Reporting

Switzerland has taken a significant step towards financial transparency by adopting a new law that mandates the automatic exchange of crypto tax information with 74 countries.

Switzerland aims for global transparency in crypto taxation with its new law allowing automatic data sharing on cryptocurrencies with 74 nations. Historically recognized for its stringent privacy laws, this new legislation has raised concerns among citizens about their previous data security.

On June 6, 2025, the Swiss Federal Council outlined the countries involved, including all European Union members, the UK, and most G20 nations (excluding the USA and Saudi Arabia). The exchange will facilitate better tracking of cryptocurrency for tax purposes, dependent on reciprocal interest and compliance with regulatory frameworks.

New Framework on Crypto Assets Set to Take Effect From January 2026

This strategic framework for the automatic exchange of crypto asset information will come into force on January 1, 2026, with the first data exchange expected in 2027. Swiss entities dealing with cryptocurrency must gather and report detailed client information to the Swiss tax office from 2026 onwards.

Bitpanda Survey on Crypto Ownership

A 2024 survey from Bitpanda found that 23% of Swiss residents hold cryptocurrencies, indicating a strong crypto-friendly atmosphere prior to the introduction of this legislation.
