Hacking Activist Group Claims $82 Million Attack on Iranian Exchange Nobitex
Nobitex, an Iranian cryptocurrency exchange, suffered a significant hack attributed to the Israel-linked group Gonjeshke Darande, resulting in nearly $82 million in stolen funds.
Iranian cryptocurrency exchange Nobitex has fallen victim to a security breach, with nearly $82 million stolen by the activist group Gonjeshke Darande, which is suspected to have ties to Israeli intelligence.
The group warned that they would release Nobitex’s internal data and source code, asserting that any assets remaining on the platform would be at risk. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), they stated:
“After Bank Sepah, it was Nobitex’s turn.”
Translation: “پس از بانک سپه، نوبت Nobitex شد”
They also threatened to leak sensitive information within 24 hours, positioning Nobitex at the center of accusations that it serves as a ’terror-financing tool’ for the Iranian regime.
Nobitex has acknowledged the attack but has not confirmed details regarding the stolen funds, amid the rising tensions between Iran and Israel, fueled by previous attacks on Iranian infrastructure by the same group.
ZachXBT, a blockchain investigator, noted that suspicious transactions totaling approximately $81.7 million were observed, tracing back to various cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin, Tron, and Dogecoin.
As the threat of the source code leak looms, Nobitex’s users may face not only financial losses but also a severe blow to the exchange’s credibility.
