Crypto Investors Suffered $2.5 Billion in Losses Due to Hacks and Scams in Early 2025

The report indicates that the majority of such incidents occurred on the Ethereum blockchain, with Bitcoin following behind.

Hackers have reportedly stolen over $2.47 billion in cryptocurrencies during the first half of 2025, which already exceeds the total losses of $2.42 billion for the entire year of 2024, as detailed in Certik’s Hack3d Report.

Key Points:

  • Major thefts were primarily due to two significant incidents: the Bybit breach and the Cetus Protocol exploit, which alone accounted for $1.78 billion in losses.
  • Wallet breaches led to losses of about $1.7 billion, while phishing attacks racked up $410 million over 132 incidents.
  • The Ethereum blockchain was the most affected, reporting $1.5 billion stolen across 164 incidents, although the second quarter witnessed a significant 52% decline in theft compared to the first quarter.

In summary, despite a concerning rise in losses, the figures suggest that concentrated attacks were the primary cause. Certik’s co-founder, Ronghui Gu, stated,

“While the overall figures are alarming, it is important to point out that the majority of the funds lost in H1 were attributable to two concentrated, high-impact events.”
(Translation: “Swhile the overall figures are alarming, it is important to note that most funds lost in the first half were due to two significant events.”)

Gu warned, however, that the data serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing vulnerabilities within the industry. The report further highlighted that $801 million was lost in just the second quarter, showcasing that Ethereum remains susceptible, with $1.5 billion taken amid 164 attacks, compared with $373 million lost from Bitcoin over a mere 10 incidents.
