Jack Dorsey Introduces Bitchat: An Offline Messaging Solution Inspired by Bitcoin
Jack Dorsey announces Bitchat, a decentralized messaging protocol that ensures secure communication without internet reliance.
Jack Dorsey has launched a whitepaper outlining Bitchat, a protocol that facilitates completely encrypted messaging without relying on the internet. Bitchat leverages Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) to create a mesh network across nearby devices, allowing for message relaying. This approach resembles how Bitcoin removes the dependency on centralized entities in finance. Key highlights from the launch include:
- Bitchat enables encrypted communication, ensuring only intended recipients can read messages.
- Messages travel through a series of devices, ensuring functionality in offline or restricted environments.
- The protocol is designed to obscure user identities and does not retain metadata, with messages disappearing by default unless saved by users.
While Dorsey does not reference Bitcoin explicitly in his announcements, he describes Bitchat as a “decentralized, peer-to-peer messaging app,” suggesting a conceptual link to the foundational principles of Bitcoin. Much like Bitcoin, Bitchat aims to eliminate central oversight in digital communication.
