Charles Schwab to Directly Offer Cryptocurrency Services to Clients, Says Incoming CEO
Rick Wurster, the incoming CEO of Charles Schwab, indicates the bank's imminent plans to offer direct cryptocurrency investments to its clients, pending regulatory changes.
Financial services giant Charles Schwab aims to offer direct cryptocurrency investments to its clients, according to Rick Wurster, the incoming CEO. In an interview with Yahoo Finance, Wurster outlined the bank's plans and its anticipation for regulatory changes that could facilitate this offering.
Wurster, who will assume the CEO role on January 1, noted that Schwab's clients are already engaging with cryptocurrency through avenues such as exchange-traded funds (ETFs), futures, and closed-end funds with great success.
"We also would like to directly offer crypto," he stated. "We’ve been waiting on a change in the regulatory environment ... and we’re confident that we think that will come in short order."
In 2021, Schwab hinted that should it enter the crypto market, the firm expects to be "highly competitive" and "disruptive."
Additionally, the bank participated as a major investor in crypto exchange EDX Markets, launched in 2022. It also introduced the Schwab Crypto Thematic Index (STCE), an ETF designed to track companies benefiting from cryptocurrency innovation.
