MetaMask and several prominent crypto wallet providers have come together to create a global phishing defense network to combat a wave of phishing attacks, including a staggering $400 million stolen in the first half of 2025.
“We’ve united to establish a global defense network capable of protecting a wider user base across the ecosystem,” noted the MetaMask team.
The Security Alliance (SEAL) emphasized that this decentralized immune system aims to enhance crypto security, allowing individuals from around the world to thwart potential phishing attempts.
This defense initiative involves major players such as MetaMask, Phantom, WalletConnect, and Backpack. It will function alongside SEAL’s verifiable phishing reports system, designed to assist security researchers in validating the phishing content present on reported malicious websites.

Addressing Crypto Drainers
The issue of crypto drainers, which continue to adapt their methods to bypass existing protections, was detailed by SEAL. They are employing innovative strategies like rotating landing pages swiftly when blocklists are updated, moving to offshore hosting in response to crackdowns, and using cloaking to avoid automated scanning.
“Drainers represent an ongoing cat-and-mouse dynamic,” explained Ohm Shah from MetaMask. This collaboration allows wallet teams to respond more quickly and implement research effectively to disable the drainers’ infrastructure.
Broad Deployment Across Wallets
This partnership enables an immediate, end-to-end process where user-submitted reports are validated and disseminated to all participating wallets, offering prompt security against new phishing threats.
“Anyone submitting a valid report can activate phishing alerts for network participants in real-time, without requiring special approvals,” SEAL stated.
Phishing attacks have become the leading cause of security incidents in the first half of this year. More than $400 million in cryptocurrency has been reported as stolen, according to CertiK.
