Ledger and Trezor Unveil New 2025 Hardware Wallets: Key Innovations for Users

An overview of the latest hardware wallets released by Ledger and Trezor, featuring significant updates and new capabilities.

Cointelegraph highlights the recent launches from Ledger and Trezor, two highly regarded names in self-custody hardware wallets.

Major Innovations in Hardware Wallets

Both Ledger and Trezor have introduced advancements in their hardware wallets, enhancing users’ ability to manage and protect their assets.

Ledger, based in Paris, released the Ledger Nano Gen5, marking a shift in branding as they now refer to all of their devices as “Ledger signers” instead of using the term “hardware wallet”.

Simultaneously, Trezor from Prague unveiled the Trezor Safe 7, claiming it to be the first hardware wallet prepared for quantum computing.

As both companies have been leaders in the self-custody market for over a decade, this article explores the essential updates, features, and security protocols of their latest models.

New Features in Ledger Signers

Ledger’s updates include renaming the Ledger Live app to Ledger Wallet and introducing Ledger Multisig, a safeguard for the multisig ecosystem addressing the blind signing vulnerability. The Nano Gen5 now has an improved screen, supports Bluetooth connectivity, and retails for $179 in the U.S. and 179 euros in Europe.

“The Ledger Nano brings the enhanced user experience from our secure touchscreen signers in a more accessible package,” a spokesperson stated.

The new device features increased screen size compared to previous models, facilitating a more user-friendly interface and clearer transaction verification.

Continuing its collaboration with renowned designers, Ledger’s latest model enlisted contributions from Tony Fadell, known for creating the iPod, and Susan Kare, a celebrated designer.

Trezor’s Quantum-Ready Innovations

Trezor’s Safe 7 marks its entry into next-gen hardware wallets with dual secure elements, Bluetooth connectivity, and a design suited for quantum resilience. Its combination of Tropic Square’s TROPIC01 chip and a secondary EAL6+ element allows it to connect wirelessly to devices like iPhones. The wallet’s price stands at 249 euros.

“The Safe 7 is capable of handling future quantum updates as needed,” stated Danny Sanders, Trezor’s COO.

Support for Older Devices

Despite the new features, both Ledger and Trezor confirm that previous wallet models will still function and receive updates. They emphasize their ongoing commitment to support all users without enforcing obsolescence through updates.

“We do not design our products with the idea of making previous versions no longer usable,” noted Sanders, stressing the variety of user needs as a priority.
