Switzerland’s Bitcoin-only investment application, Relai, has secured a MiCA (Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation) license in France, with the aim of making Bitcoin accessible to a wider audience.
The approval was granted by France’s financial regulator, the Autorité des Marchés Financiers (AMF), on a recent Thursday, as detailed in official documentation.
“We’re incredibly proud to be one of the first Bitcoin companies to get the MiCA license and are eager to expand to France first and Europe in a second step,”
— Julian Liniger, CEO of Relai
Founded in 2020 in Zurich, Relai operates a platform dedicated solely to Bitcoin, allowing users to buy, sell, and save BTC with self-custody options, thus enabling users to manage their shipments independently.
A Significant Milestone for the Bitcoin Sector in Europe
Receiving the MiCA license permits Relai to offer a range of regulated Bitcoin investment services through its application.
With this authorization, Relai can facilitate SEPA (Single Euro Payments Area) transactions across the EU, along with providing increased trading limits in euros.
Adem Bilican, Relai’s co-founder, remarked that the MiCA license marks a substantial achievement not just for the company but also for the Bitcoin ecosystem in Europe.
“Our goal is clear: Bringing Bitcoin to as many people as possible. Simple, secure, regulated,”
— Adem Bilican
This acquisition of the MiCA license is in line with Relai’s strategic plan, as they had openly conveyed intentions to obtain it following their successful $12 million Series A funding round in late 2024, led by Ego Death Capital with backing from Plan B Bitcoin Fund, Timechain, and Solit Group.
The announcement arrived shortly after Blockchain.com disclosed it had also received a MiCA license from the Maltese Financial Services Authority.
