As Hurricane Melissa unleashes devastating winds of 185 mph across the Caribbean, the decentralized messaging app Bitchat has been downloaded en masse in Jamaica as traditional communication methods cease to function.
Bitchat, a messaging platform utilizing Bluetooth mesh networks for communication without the internet, has rapidly ascended to become the second-most downloaded application on both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store in Jamaica, providing crucial support to 2.8 million citizens during this crisis.
Currently, Bitchat sits just behind the weather app Zoom Earth, indicating that Jamaicans are prioritizing access to real-time weather information and communication.

On Wednesday, CNN reported that Hurricane Melissa has tragically claimed the lives of over 30 individuals across the Caribbean, including 23 in Haiti, with numerous homes and businesses being destroyed.
Previously, the popularity of decentralized messaging applications surged as users migrated from centralized platforms, often subject to censorship limitations.
However, Bitchat now represents a vital tool for those in areas experiencing disrupted internet services, whether from government actions or natural disasters.
Similar patterns have been observed previously, with Bitchat downloads increasing in Nepal over government corruption and social media bans, as well as in Indonesia amid protests.
Additionally, the European Union is currently considering the controversial “Chat Control” law, which would propose regulations requiring message screenings in encrypted messaging apps, closer to passage before facing opposition from Germany over its constitutionality.
The latest vote has been pushed back until early December.
