Elon Musk is preparing to launch a new messaging application called X Chat, which aims to provide enhanced privacy features and compete directly with popular apps like Telegram and WhatsApp.
Musk anticipates that X Chat will be available within the upcoming months and reassures that the app will not engage in selling or sharing user data with advertisers.
“On X, we just rebuilt the entire messaging stack into what’s called ‘X Chat,’” Musk mentioned during his recent appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience, which aired on Friday.
“It’s using a peer-to-peer-based encryption system, kind of similar to Bitcoin. It’s very good encryption; we’re testing it thoroughly.”
Musk expressed his goal for the new messaging platform to avoid the data collection practices seen in competitors like WhatsApp, which he critiqued for gathering user information to deliver targeted ads. He emphasized that these practices pose significant security risks, as they could potentially allow hackers access to private messages.
Does WhatsApp Read Your Messages?
WhatsApp, owned by Meta, maintains that it does not have access to users’ private conversations due to their end-to-end encryption.
Despite this, they acknowledge that metadata—information like who you are communicating with and the frequency of those conversations—is not encrypted, which can expose user data in different ways.
In his statements, Musk insists that X Chat will not include advertising hooks to protect user privacy.
“I’m not saying it’s perfect, but our goal with X Chat is to replace what used to be the Twitter DM stack with a fully encrypted system where you can text, send files, do audio video calls, and I think it will be the least insecure of any messaging system.”
Musk confirmed that X Chat will be accessible both as part of the X platform and as a standalone application. For more information on this development, see related articles and features.
