US Government Approaches Resolution in Roger Ver's Tax Case with $50 Million Agreement

The US is close to concluding the 2024 criminal tax case against Bitcoin advocate Roger Ver, with a proposed dismissal based on a financial agreement.

Less than a week after an arrangement surfaced between the Bitcoin advocate known as ‘Bitcoin Jesus’ and U.S. authorities, it appears Roger Ver’s criminal tax case from 2024 may soon conclude.

A recent filing in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California revealed that the government is recommending Judge Michael Fitzgerald dismiss Ver’s indictment with no prejudice. The U.S. government has reached a tentative agreement with Ver that entails a payment of approximately $49.9 million to cover taxes, penalties, and interest owed to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) for his Bitcoin holdings.

This proposed dismissal follows a deferred prosecution agreement filed by the government in September, which outlined the terms necessary for Ver’s case to be dropped. Ver conceded that he was obliged to declare and pay taxes on specific cryptocurrency assets before relinquishing his U.S. citizenship in 2014.

Initially, the indictment launched in April 2024 accused Ver of misrepresenting tax claims linked to his ownership of around 131,000 BTC valued at $74 million back in 2014. The Justice Department claimed that Ver sought to avoid taxes by renouncing his U.S. citizenship and subsequently gaining citizenship in St. Kitts and Nevis.

The motion noted that the defendant acknowledged that when filing his returns in May 2016, he failed to report all Bitcoins owned and the capital gains derived from those transactions, resulting in a significant loss to the U.S. amounting to $16,864,105.

Some cryptocurrency enthusiasts continue to hope for a presidential pardon

As of this writing, the proposed motion to dismiss awaited a federal judge’s approval. The fact that it has not met with opposition from Ver’s legal team, paired with its foundation on a negotiation with prosecutors, hints that the criminal proceedings might soon conclude.

Despite the developments, speculation about Ver receiving a pardon from U.S. President Donald Trump was still prevalent on prediction platforms like Polymarket and Kalshi, with chances calculated at 17% and 19%, respectively. According to Polymarket’s stipulations, this wager will only be settled if Ver obtains a “presidential pardon, commutation, or reprieve from Donald Trump” before December 31.

In January, Ver publicly appealed to Trump amid his legal struggles, asserting that he had been targeted through a political campaign against him.
