AWS Outage Disrupts Major Crypto Platforms Like Coinbase and Robinhood

An AWS outage on Monday affected multiple crypto platforms, revealing the risks tied to centralized cloud services for cryptocurrency transactions.

The recent outage of Amazon Web Services (AWS) has had a significant impact on major platforms such as Coinbase and Robinhood. This incident marks the second significant AWS failure since April, which had already raised concerns regarding the reliability of centralized cloud service providers for the cryptocurrency sector.

During this outage, Coinbase experienced increased error rates, causing difficulties for users trying to access accounts, place orders, and withdraw funds. The disruption also affected its Base app.

AWS confirmed that services relying on the affected US-EAST-1 data center were recovering, with updates released approximately three hours after the initial reports. Coinbase reiterated their efforts to resolve the issue with high urgency.

“We can confirm global services and features that rely on US-EAST-1 have also recovered. We continue to work towards full resolution and will provide updates as we have more information to share,” AWS stated in a Monday notice.

Max Li, the Founder and CEO of OORT, emphasized the need for decentralized cloud solutions in light of this incident. He explained that decentralized computing could effectively reduce reliance on singular points that commonly lead to service interruptions.

In past months, multiple users of Robinhood also reported delays in trading execution due to the outage, while social media echoed complaints from frustrated traders.

“Amazon down, Robinhood down…” remarked crypto trader Kushy in a post on X.

The incident highlights the pressing necessity of developing robust decentralized alternatives within the cryptocurrency ecosystem to mitigate risks associated with outages from major centralized providers. Companies like Vanar are leading the charge in this regard, seeking to create blockchain-based infrastructure that minimizes dependence on traditional cloud services.
